My spouse is from Russia. He would NEVER presume that ANY stores, services, government depts provide translations, printed materials in Russian, or ANY sort of special treatment. There are lots of Russians, Chinese, and other foreign nationals here in the states, but NOBODY CARES about THEIR language issues, DO THEY???? Oh, no, only Spanish speakers are accomodated. And it is entirely to their DETRIMENT.

Bottom line, like it or not, if you want to get ahead here, you’ve got to have English. Accommodating Spanish speakers everywhere from Sears to government agencies is only holding people back.

ok.. so english while it is not the “official” language is spoken by 82% of the people in this country… so I would have 2 agree with the shirt. I don’t have a problem with anyone speaking their native language but if you immigrate 2 another country then you need 2 learn things like the language spoken in that country, and the laws in that country. There is no “official” language in America- It’s the melting pot. You can gripe about it or appreciate the diversity of this country.

If North Americans include natives and people from the Islands, well.. no English as a mother tongue there.. f.i Hawaii…Why the need to force other people to speak it out?.. I can’t vouch for Mexico, as I’ve never been there, but most mainland Europeans also speak good English (especially in tourist areas), as they have little expectation that English or American visitors will be able to speak a word of their language.

I am in complete agreement that ANYone who legally or illegally comes to our country to live needs to learn our language, we should not be changing our signs, offering twice the paperwork at any Dr or business office or store to provide the spanish alternatives. They need to find a translation service on their own and learn the common language. And anyone in customer service in retail knows its annoying and time consuming to try to help anyone who cant even try to learn the basics.
Like the one said we would be completely expected to learn the common language in any foreign country, much less the handouts they can get here that americans that might actually need cant get, but I digress

Last year I invested 3 months learning basic German before going to Germany just for a 10 day vacation. I would never be so inconsiderate as to expect my host or worse my new neighbors to learn my language in order to communicate.

The thing that bothers me about this guy in this shirt, is I can guarantee he’s one of the folks that would go abroad and demand that everyone speak english to him, even though it may not be the native language of wherever he’s visiting.

I’ve been to Mexico, France, Germany, etc… and while yes, there are some things written in English, I was expected to speak their language. I even had some people get really upset with me for using a translator book. BUT, I did NOT ask them to speak English to communicate with me. But these same people (mostly Spanish speaking) come to this predominately English speaking country and expect us to change everything to meet their needs. AND, I challenge you to go to a grocery store and find five items that DON’T have a Spanish translation somewhere on the label.

Whereas the “official” language might be English, and I agree people should learn to speak it, I also believe we should have multilingual signs. Not everyone on American soil is living here and for those visitors we should accomodate them. Yes they might have learned some conversational English, but they wouldn’t know everything. In this fight to stand up for our belief in speaking English we have forgotten there are other aspects like visitors, or people still learning. When I go to Europe I learn the basics of that language but there is no way to learn the entire language of multiple countries. They have signs in English underneath their native tongues. This not only helps me in the short term, it helps me learn their dialect for that particular situation by being able to read both languages. Again, I believe people living here should learn the language, but should we penalize them with confusion until they do? That’s a bit cruel in my opinion.

There is not an official language. Just because our founding documents are in English this does not grant the language official status. What happened to belief in true personal freedom? If someone wants to speak Spanish, French, or Romanian or any other language more power to them.

It’s not about knowing another language and using it, it’s about REFUSING to learn the language of the coutry you live in. I agree with you that everyone who is in this coutry LEGALLY should be afforded all the rights and liberties our fore fathers fought for. I do not, however, think that Americans should be so passive when it comes to certain things like being able to understand an unfortunately LARGE number of non-English speaking immigrants.

I think when you enter a particular country, it’s beneficial to make your best effort to speak in the native language of that country – especially if you are to reside there for an extended period.

What I don’t think is cool is kinda shoving this in someone’s face. Just like some have said you wouldn’t go overseas and yell “Speak english!” at someone, the tone of the message as well as the message itself is important and here it says less “Welcome, you’d find it easier if you spoke English here” and more, “You’re different – go away!”

I was born and raised in europe and i agree. If your gonna move to a another country than you need to learn that language. I am fluent in english as well as my own language. I cant stand when i hear that someone has lived here in the us for years and still can not speak english. I am self taught, because english is not hard to learn. Hell every one every where speaks it. It all boils down to this: You left your country to come to America an english speaking country, LEARN ENGLISHn!!!

Just a note – I challenge you to find something official from the US government stating that our official language is English. In fact, this country has no official language. There have been several attempts to enact an official language, but none have made it to law.

I’m not taking a position here about whether we should have a national language, and if so, what. Just correcting the misconception that there is no national language.

I have mixed feelings on this issue. While I do like variety in America and I do speak a fair amount of spanish I would like immigrants to learn some english. While I am sure this guy is ignorant as hell I don’t see why everybody hates on people with this particular belief. Is it wrong to want to be able to communicate in our countries official language. I also understand learning a new language at an older age is not an easy task but to completely forgo learning some english seems pretty shitty too.

I hate to break it to you all, but the United States has no official language or religion. You can look it up. When southern states have raised the question of making English the official language of the country, even under a Republican majority in Congress, the measure has been shot down.

Now, I have traveled all over the world. Know what? With the exception of France and Quebec, it doesn’t matter where I go… People recognize me as an American and want to practice their English. From the chick at the coffee shop, to the people at the posh places. Sure, get out of the cities and the number of people who speak English drops off, especially if you get out into farmland. But for the most part, you will find signs in both the native language and English when you are abroad. Unless they speak French. There is a move on to preserve that language.

ok ok..in all seriousness, it’s ignorance to believe that our country is based primarily on the english language. if you want to get technical, it was based off of many languages (native american) before anyone ever “discovered” the place. all the other countries in the world are multi-lingual. it wouldn’t hurt for anyone to expand their education in laguage a little more. i’m not saying we should all be extremely versed, but having some knowledge and understanding would work wonders. i DO believe, however, that if you are going to visit or live in a country that is not your native, you should educate yourself on the languages and cultures so you don’t look or act like a total tool while being there. let’s be smart people. that’s what our brains are for.
