Hippie Bus

It is 2009. Are there that many Hippies hanging out in Kansas that someone needed to manufacture this mobile version of the Spahn’s Movie Ranch?

October 17th, 2009
LOL I remember my first joint now
October 17th, 2009
When you’re trying to pickup little kids, you might as well double your odds by putting a creepy van on top of a school bus. You’re almost guaranteed schoolyard hookups.
October 17th, 2009
It’s The Partridge Family meets Major Dad!
October 17th, 2009
Can that thing actually clear an overpass? I know it can’t make it through a drive-thru!
October 17th, 2009
I would’nt mind riding in that!! lol
October 17th, 2009
But You can drive from the V W. The matching 2 tone paint is another plus & talk about sales appeal. If they decide to sell, People will fly in from as far away as Kansas City…………Or Not.
October 17th, 2009
HA!!! Hilarious comment on this one!
October 17th, 2009

They see me rollin’. They hatin’.
October 17th, 2009
Um,,,, how tall is that thing?
Can it take out a bridge?
Hmmmm I think it would be good to put a cam on top, so you could see how close to tall bridges it really is!!

Now that’s what I call a Magic School Bus!
October 17th, 2009
It could only be better if it were;
A) painted to look like the Partridge family bus, or
B) painted to look like the Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine, or
C) painted to look like the A-Team van.
October 17th, 2009
Fabulous…. absolutely fabulous……..
October 17th, 2009

October 17th, 2009
i just want to know what you would be doing in a bus where you need all that extra headroom
October 17th, 2009
It’s clearly a DUI double decker tour bus. “Welcome to Walmart! To your right is a woman with dread locks. Look closely, she’s not wearing anything under that skimpy dress. And to the left, you’ll see a man in a bikini.”
October 17th, 2009
This says horror movie more than hippie to me!
October 17th, 2009
The first overpass or low bridge and that thing is history. But, I’ve heard that Kansas is mostly flat so maybe there aren’t too many obstacles that would destroy this “creation”.
October 17th, 2009
he’s carrying along the VW for when the Ford breaks down..
October 17th, 2009

Inspired by the recent Transformers movie and their common bond for psychadelic sixties style, the Scooby Doo gang and the Patridge Family combine forces, and their rides, to create an elite musical mystery unit called “Patridge Doo”.

October 17th, 2009
AH HELL! I’d recognize that hill in the background anywhere! How embarrassing!
October 17th, 2009
It’s kinda symbolic of the whole state of education these days: lefty is humping the huge government system, and they both look like crap.
October 17th, 2009
dude that bus is awesome…i wonder if you can ride in the top part too????
October 17th, 2009

October 17th, 2009
That’s interesting; there’s one of those ex-school buses with a VW welded to it around here in Colorado Springs too. It’s a play on those old train cars with the observation decks I guess.
October 17th, 2009
Mother gives birth in Walmart parking lot, names the baby Wally…
October 17th, 2009
It’s the Westboro Baptist Church limo
October 17th, 2009
Theres NO magic going on with that school bus.
October 18th, 2009
Looks like the VW Bus is humping the School Bus which produce really ugly offspring that shop inside Walmart.
October 18th, 2009
Makes me proud to be from Kansas…LOL
October 18th, 2009
Seriously, make another site for the wal-cars. They suck. I just wanna look at fat people in ill-fitting clothing.
October 18th, 2009
What I want to know: can the vehicle actually be driven from the upper driver’s seat? If so, they have achieved an engineering miracle.
October 18th, 2009
really??? really??? this is what my local walmart has been reduced to???? I actually saw this thing in the parking lot…didn’t know what the hell it was!
October 18th, 2009
I thought this was People of WalMart, not random vehicles in random parking lots that may or may not be WalMart. It’s not rocket surgery! Cmon!
October 18th, 2009
Oooh double decker, very fancy, very european. lol
October 18th, 2009
They must be lost. Lawrence is a little over an hour east of there.
October 18th, 2009
OMG MANHATTAN! I WAS THERE LAST WEEKEND! INSANEEEEE!!!
October 18th, 2009
Nothing about this says “hippy” but there are a lot of hippies in KS.
I’ve seen similar home made double busses, including a 1950′s Chevy school bus with a 1990′s Dodge Caravan body welded to the top. The kids would sit in it and pretend to drive it. It was 13’2″ so it would clear bridges that are 13’6 CLEARANCE.
October 18th, 2009
It looks like it would be cool to stay in at deer camp. Plenty of room, dry, and comes with it’s own shooting tower!
October 18th, 2009
Whoa whoa whoa. You’re telling me I’ve lived in Kansas my entire life and haven’t seen this yet? I NEED TO SEE THIS BUS!
October 18th, 2009

October 18th, 2009
I actually live in Kansas. If I ever see this van, I will bow down and worship at the foot of it. I have never actually met a hippie since I have lived here, which has been for almost 10 years. A wide variety of other people, but not many hippies.
October 18th, 2009
whack
October 18th, 2009

October 18th, 2009
He just couldn’t part with the VW so he had to do something with it.

October 18th, 2009

October 18th, 2009
awww it has a baby! or a sun dome!!!
October 18th, 2009
I remember seeing that bus or one just like it on tour with the Dead many, many years ago. That thing was like a clown car for hippies.
October 18th, 2009
I love it! I wonder if the VW is where they sleep?
October 18th, 2009
Got dropped there in one of those Kansas twisters and they just decided it worked.
October 18th, 2009

I used to see it in Maryland when the Grateful Dead was in town – I believe they sold burritos and stuff – don’t know what other “stuff” I can only imagine… still AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 18th, 2009
It’s a skylight type unit…pretty groovy if you ask me!!
October 18th, 2009
Hahaha, I’ve seen that bus at our walmart before!! Go Manhattan, KS!
October 18th, 2009
Wow…It’s almost artistic…
October 18th, 2009
Obviously nobody else here has ever been to a Rainbow Gathering. I’ve seen this bus many times, and some even more interesting vehicles in this vein.
When you drive something like this you look at *every* overpass clearance sign, and you get very used to talking to cops.
October 18th, 2009
Austrailan for Double Decker……
October 18th, 2009
There’s the old saying, “You can’t polish a turd”. Clearly, if you have enough TurtleWax you can…

October 18th, 2009
This is very cool. I’m guessing they have stairs inside so you can get to the VW part. Looks like lots of fun.

Teenage dreams in a teenage circus
Running around like a clown on purpose
Who gives a damn about the family you come from?
No giving up when you’re young and you want some
Running around again
Running for running
Waking up
In the midday sun
What’s to live for?
You could see what I’ve done
Staring at emotion
In the light of day
I was running
From the things that you’d say
We are not what you think we are
We are golden, we are golden.
We are not what you think we are
We are golden, we are golden.
Teenage dreams in a teenage circus
Running around like a clown on purpose
Who gives a damn about the family you come from?
No giving up when you’re young and you want some
Running around again
Running for running
Running around again
Running for running
I was a boy
At an open door
Why you staring
Do you still think that you know?
Looking for treasure
In the things that you threw
Like a magpie
I live for glitter, not you
We are not what you think we are
We are golden, we are golden.
We are not what you think we are
We are golden, we are golden.
Teenage dreams in a teenage circus
Running around like a clown on purpose
Who gives a damn about the family you come from
No giving up when you’re young and you want some
Now I’m sitting alone
I’m finally looking around
Left here on my own
I’m gonna hurt myself
Maybe losing my mind
I’m still wondering why
Had to let the world let it bleed dry
We are not what you think we are
We are not what you think we are
We are not what you think we are
We are golden, we are golden
Teenage dreams in a teenage circus
Running around like a clown on purpose
Who gives a damn about the family you come from
No giving up when you’re young and you want some
Running around again
Running for running
Running around again
Running for running
We are not what you think we are
We are golden, we are golden.

Slugbug green and brown.
October 18th, 2009
That’s the Kind Veggie Burrito Bus most frequently seen on tour with the Grateful Dead.
I think it was parked in East Lansing, Michigan for a while. That bus is famous.

October 19th, 2009
That’s Kansas for you!! and Yes to your question…there really ARE that many hippies here!!
October 19th, 2009

October 19th, 2009
If this van’s a-smokin’….it just means we’re tokin’!
October 19th, 2009
This is a travesty. Scooby Doo’s mystery machine has been hi-jacked by the Partridge family bus.
October 19th, 2009
the bus has been all over the country….over and under all kinds o passes…it was built with all in mind….the overhead is for ventilation…it is a mobile cafe traveling to music festivals!
October 19th, 2009
I’ve seen that bus! They sell coffee at music festivals.
October 19th, 2009
Does it come with militia required gun turrets on the VW expansion kit?
October 19th, 2009
So THAT’S what happened to the bus from Richard Pryor’s movie, “Bustin’ Loose!” Walmart shoppers are very socially conscious and always recycle!
October 19th, 2009
this makes me sad, this was taken in my home town of Manhattan, KS…and people ask why I left that town.
October 19th, 2009
Yeah, that place is AWESOME! Wood floors and everything in it. It’s actually a fully funtional cafe serving a bunch of different stuff….
October 19th, 2009
Is the upper V W the penthouse?
October 19th, 2009
I assure you, Kansas has more hippies than people like to think. That bus is at home during Wakarusa Fest in Lawrence.
October 19th, 2009
Well, to all the wondering folks, this is THE Birdsong Cafe, hailing from Kansas. Making awesome grilled wraps, cold- brewed coffee, and yummy treats. We do rainbow gatherings and go on dead tour . . . and love to give tours if your nice. If you see us on the road give us a honk, not the finger . . . we like people, and music and having a good time.
October 19th, 2009
good ol manhattan… kansas is definitely full of hippies =p
October 19th, 2009
The Birdsong Cafe opened for business at the Kansas Sampler in ’08 and was one of the most popular vendor there! They serve really good paninni sandwiches, fresh pressed apple cider, gourmet coffees, etc… The people who operate it are not rednecks or hillbillies! Just some nice folks having fun!

October 20th, 2009
I sooo want that!
October 20th, 2009
Hey, that’s a great cafe! And it gets at least 5 mpg, not 2! I’m sure the USMC would be honored to be seen in it. Semper Fi !
October 20th, 2009
Yeah, and you’d think that thing would be in Lawrence, not Manhattan. Maybe they got confused because they hot-boxed the van. Or maybe they didn’t get the memo that Wakarusa was cancelled?
October 20th, 2009
That’s actually kind of cool in a weird, weird sort of way.
October 21st, 2009
Vannibus!!!
October 21st, 2009
That is so freakin’ cool. Like for real.
October 21st, 2009
It kinda looks like the hippie van tried to jump the bus and missed.
October 22nd, 2009
I hate to say it, but with a better paint job that would make an excellent tour bus for a band or something. couldn’t you just imagine going on a road trip in one of those things. It would be like having a room up top just to get high and admire the scenery.
October 22nd, 2009
Some old friends knew a guy who used to put VW’s onto buses at least 20 years ago in Arizona or up in Oregon. His name was Silverbear and he built alot of these things. Some school buses were chopped and raised to allow for kitchen cabinets and overhead beds. People could live in them out in the woods. My friends bus could carry the teepee poles for their huge, awsome white teepee. Those were the days…
October 22nd, 2009
I’ve seen that bus at LifeLight in sufu!
October 22nd, 2009

October 26th, 2009

October 30th, 2009
I live in Nor-Cal, and I saw a bus just like that the other day, but w/ 2 VWs on the roof instead of one. Plus some ridiculous hippy mural covering it… That sort of thing is normal around here.

November 1st, 2009
I saw a bus just like this in my town one hot Summer and it was full of people handing out pamphlets and trying to get impressionable teenagers to get on the bus by offering them water… I had to tell them to leave my Cumberland Farms parking lot hahahaha there should be a people of Cumby’s website
November 1st, 2009
Lmao this is the bus we are taking to hell!
November 1st, 2009
I became deeply confused, now I only want to commission all my money so I may own one of these precious vehicles. Why not have Volkswagen try and construct these for all schools? That would make truant students wish to attend, and also solve the potential boredom on bus rides. Just that pulling up to your curb every morning signifies an apocalypse coming. I’d still hail that rather than a cab, any day!
November 3rd, 2009
oh my god. i live by that walmart! i have experienced that bus!
November 3rd, 2009

November 10th, 2009
i actually have met this guy.. many years ago at a music festival (big surprise, eh)
it was really tricked out on the inside and the VW part was the “master bedroom”
he sold pizza by the slice out of it.
his name was josh.
November 11th, 2009
OMG those 12 tribes people are f*cking crazy! they talk to you with their eyes so wide you can see the white all around their pupils… i still have one of their pamphlets! they actually sleep on that d*mn bus, and spend a LOT of time in Kansas City bothering IHOP’ers and other people outside of the convention centers.
November 11th, 2009
I’m totally impressed.
November 12th, 2009
Haha…that’s my neighbor’s bus…his house is painted the same colors…
November 12th, 2009
I was just showing this picture to a friend. He said this bus travels around northwest Arkansas and the people sell sandwiches out of it. These people own a deli on Dickson Street in Fayetteville. My friend also said the sandwiches are pretty good.
November 14th, 2009
