Time Of The Month

It was the ’1st of tha month’ and, of course, everyone that receives government benefits was at Walmart. An announcement was made that the EBT Machines (food stamps) were down. All of a sudden, people started abandoning carts FULL of food and the store cleared out. As my mother and I were leaving, it was a maze of raw meat and popsicles.

I guess that this story will win the Brevity Award.
While it would certainly not qualify for the award for “most interesting”, it definitely should qualify for an award as the briefest tale on this site in quite a while.

I doubt this really happened, Why, the EBT machine is the same machine as the credit/debit card machine. And I do not see why they would say EBT machine is down without mentioning that the credit/debit card machine is down as well because as I mentioned before they are the same machine.

CEE LOVE, it wouldn’t be mentioned because it had nothing to do with the story. just like me telling you that i once threw up the colors of the rainbow after I took an antibiotic on an empty stomach.

i feel sorry for the people whi have to out all that crap away, but really, itd probably get done better and quicker than having all the customers shove items back on the shelves where ever they saw fit.

cee love- I work at a walmart and this has happened. It wasn’t actually the machine itself though, it was something with the food stamp system. EBT cards were the only ones affected and it was down for a couple hours. People went nuts.

Good points, the EBT machine is the same one as the debit/credit card machine. So I call BS on this story, at least the part where they specifically say the EBT machine is down. They should have said the credit card machine is down, and then everyone could have left because they had no cash or checks with them. Trust me, I work retail, and it happens regularly – they can’t use a card and have no other means of payment so they just leave.

Be thankful you can afford to buy your own groceries.

I don’t believe all those with EBT did that. There are always jerks around including in your snob level but you’re trying to makes us believe the poor are all spiteful and uncouth. I call you a LIAR and demand some proof of this.

This story is not BS, I also work at Walmart and this did actually happen. We were unable to take EBT cards for several hours because the food stamp system was being updated or something. Don’t talk about this unless you actually work at a Walmart and know what’s going on. People did go ape shit because they couldn’t buy their junk food with food “skramps”. I wish for once these bums would have to pay for their food like the rest of us.

And benjamin, be glad you have a job and can afford food. unfortunatly i dont have a job and have to rely on food stamps. if they had made the announcement that ebt was down or whatever and all i had to pay for my food was ebt, that shit would stay right there wherever i was

I used to work at a grocery store (not Walmart) and can say that this sort of thing doesn’t just happen at Walmart–it’s true. FULL carts of groceries just sitting in the middle of the aisles. Ice cream and frozen stuff melting, meats and hot-foods getting cold…

At the very least, I would have expected people to have the decency to bring the cart to the courtesy desk and say “I need someone to put this stuff back; I can’t pay for it if your system is down.” Really, it’s not the store’s fault if EBT goes down; it’s the state’s.

I’m sure this happens in larger stores, but when I worked at a Qwik-E-Mart and our EBT system went down (yes, they ARE separate systems) almost everyone put the stuff back themselves. Some even apologized that I had to void out the transaction. Everyone understood it was a State problem – and obviously we wanted the customers.

I imagine it’s quite a different story if someone has a cart full of groceries, though. That’s rude – but no more rude than what I’ve seen tons of not-poor people do when Trader Joe’s was out of their favorite Brie or wine or gluten-free cake mix or whatever. They do all their shopping, fill the cart, THEN ask for “the one thing they came for.” If we didn’t have it, they’d leave their cart there in a huff, usually blocking a check-out lane in the process. First World Problems.

Michigan Walmart Worker, you sound like a lovely person and I’m sure you’re a ray of sunshine to those around you.

Since you actually sound pretty lacking in the intelligence department, I’d like to clarify for you that the above sentence is sarcastic. You actually sound like a Creature. I feel sorry for the people who have to work with you.

My husband works his ass off and we still don’t make enough money to pay all of our bills and buy food. So we do have to get help for food through the state. We are not rude or lazy or trailer trash. Not all people who get food assistance is lazy or unkempt or trashy. I am a stay at home mom and I take care of the kids and the house and he is a CNA and I don’t spend our assistance on junk food. I buy what I can afford but I make sure it isn’t junk. So I wish people would quit lumping all of us together.

The credit card/EBT/debit/ATM terminals at use in the store are connected to a computer that acquires transactions and processes them through multiple networks. Apparently, the network connection for EBT was down or the application was unavailable. It’s like having one website down vs. the whole internet. Plausible story.

  20. Some worthless poor person

Posts like this make me ill. I work three jobs and still need ebt simply because my worthless, piece of shit ex-husband, who is the father to all four of my children, doesn’t pay anything in child support. Guess who is the “lazy” woman who needs to use food stamps… me! I would never leave a cart full of food in the middle of the aisle. I have something called common sense and decency. However, everyone on food stamps in lumped into the “stupid, white trash” category. Get off of your high horse! Just because you have some shit job at Wal-Mart and can afford your ramen noodles doesn’t mean you are better than everyone else. I have to humble myself and use assistance because it means a better life for my kids. Also, if you are going to insult “white trash, poor people”, learn how to write a sentence. It is a simple lesson that we learn in elementary school and it is expected to be used if you wish to convey an intelligent argument. I would love to meet you one day, use my food stamp card at your register and make note of your below 80 IQ.

P.s. Watch “Wal-Mart: The high cost of low prices”. Wal-Mart encourages their employees to utilize social programs in lieu of providing a livable wage and benefits. But go ahead, say rude things about other using those programs. (sarcasm)

I agree that this is a shit thing to do, but it’s not just people on EBT. I almost punched an old man at work once because he was dickish enough to say TO MY FACE that he was proud of himself for his “skill” of handling lazy workers, i.e. the old fart would take his sweet time gathering a full cart of groceries, and if he wasn’t to the register getting checked out within ten minutes of stepping into his line, he’d leave the whole damn cart there to rot and walk out. He then proceeded to criticize my store for not having all of our tills open when we have EIGHT of them total, and it was 9am on a regular fall day. At that early, we’ll have at most four tills and the self-checks open, on holidays we’ll have six.

I had no smiles for him and I’m glad to say that I haven’t seen him since.

Given that I have worked several years at Walmart I have seen this more than one. BUT what really gets the workers at my store is when someone with a limited amount of EBT money comes to the register with TWICE what they can afford and then leaving frozen foods and raw meat behind and they get mad at us that they can’t afford all the food. Receving stamps is not really looked down on in my area, mainly because even some of the school teachers use them, given the rural area and low pay.

Ms .Snakelady – it’s people like you and with the attitude you have is what gives people who use food stamps a bad name. The laziness of not putting your groceries back probably goes to show why you don’t have a job. It’s not the WalMart employees fault that the system goes down at times. So why should they have to take and put the cart full of groceries that YOU GOT and put it all away? Leaving your cart there is not only rude but tasteless. It would be one thing if you’re disabled and you kindly asked an employee to put it all back versus just leaving the cart there. I get that food stamps that are there for people who need them. Not only that your negative attitude is not pretty. I know my grammar is perfect all the time but, yours goes to show that you are also too lazy to type correctly. Another note you can still have a job and receive food stamps. Programs like that are income based.
