The Self Checkout

Okay stop looking for something gross, you won’t find it. Well, self-cut jorts aren’t really the in thing right now but that’s not the point of this post. The point of this is for me to get something off my chest. If you have 5,000 items in your cart, I better not see you in self-checkout. It takes 42 minutes to get through 5 items on those damn things and you put half the store in your cart! Lines take forever in that place and every one of them is always full so when I run in to get 1 item and I see your buggy stocked for Armageddon, I about lose my shit. Knock it off people!

This is so true! I am glad I am not the only who thinks the same way.
When I shop at Walmart it is for 1-3 items in my hands so those self checkouts are ideal for me.

It annoys me for sure, but then I realized that most of these things do not have an item limit. We usually have 6 self check outs so I just wait for one of the others to free up. Now if they had an item limit on them I’d be pissed to see someone come through with a giant cart full.

But Wal-Mart seldom has full service check outs open–at least not the ones that you could get in line with a cartful of things and make it out of the store on the same day you went in! They have 30 full serve checkout lanes-and only 2 open at any given time!

I will say, I use self check out on my normal shopping trips because the IDIOT cashiers (unless you get someone OVER the age of 21) do not know how to bag groceries, whether it be in plastic or paper.

After so long of telling these people to “bag my groceries like YOU would want your groceries bagged” and I end up with bread UNDER frozen foods.. I’m going to use the self check out.. I always look around me though, if someone has a handful of stuff, I try to be considerate and let others ahead if I know I’m going to take a little longer.

Sometimes.. it’s not just the customers that are “People of Walmart”. The employees aren’t that bright either. LOL!

I disagree. If you know what you are doing at the self checkout it can go really fast. Also, some people live an hour away from the nearest walmart so they do their entire months shopping in one night. Plus, we don’t know the circumstances of this photo either. It could be that all the other chashier lines were full of people to the point customers were lined up into the clothing areas and maybe the self checkout was shorter so she decided not to make people wait on her in the cashier lines. I’ve seen that happen. I really don’t think this is “People of Walmart” material. This is a place to share experiences of people who have no clue, not to vent your pet peeves. In this instance she might have known what she was doing and tried to help than do harm. This is a pathetic waste of a photo for this site, and I always love the photos on this site. This is the first time I didn’t.

Self Checkouts should have an item limit. They have a cashier thereto help when a problem happens, so they can sit and SEE if there is more than say 5 to 10 items.

I just laugh at them because I know that she’ll need employee intervention every single time she fills the scale and that it’ll take her an hour to check out and she’s clearly already been there at least three; whereas, if she checks out at a full service lane, it’ll take 20 minutes.

P.S. If you see that her cart is overflowing and you still choose to wait in queue behind her, that’s your problem not hers. Just saying.

Why does the world feel the need to bitch about everything? If this lady wants to take 2 hours checking herself out just so she doesn’t have to stand and wait in another long line, it’s her perrogative. Sure, you may not want to be BEHIND that in line, but that’s why there are 20 other check-out lines you can stand in, and if your point is that you only have a few items and don’t want to wait for people that have a lot of items, there are not only self-check-outs, there are also express lanes meant for 20 items or less and if you have a lot more than that they usually bitch at you and make you relocate, so maybe instead of bitching about a lady who is not breaking any “rules” by taking her large cart to a check-out line that is not off-limits to her, go to one that IS off-limits to her. Go to one of the 4 plus express lanes!!!! And stfu!

This is for Jenn who called cashiers idiots… I happen to be a cashier at WalMart, and did it ever occur to you that the CUSTOMERS might actually be the idiots and not the cashiers? We go through a lot of training before we actually take to the registers. Then, we have to smile and take all kinds of abuse and crap from rude and obnoxius customers who think its their right to treat us that way. They throw their groceries on the belts, or at us, talk on their cell phones and ignore us, get pissed off if their credit card doesnt swipe right the first time, and expect us to know the price of every single item in the store and if its on sale, heven help us if we dont know that too. They have no patience with us, and on an express lane, they constantly try to laugh it off with ” I might have a “few” over 20 items, I hope thats ok…” We cant tell them to go away, we would get in trouble, so we have to smile and take all that shit. And they wonder why its hard to keep cashiers at Wal Mart? Think about how you treat them. We are just doing our jobs like you are trying to pay our bills too.

I agree whole-heartedly. Self checkout is a great thing, but I believe that if you have more than 10 or 15 items, then you are really going to be checked out faster in a cashier’s line. (I wish that I had empirical evidence to support this hypothesis, but as I never, ever shop at Wal*Mart, I just cannot say.)

self check out was never a good idea, I worked at one a few years ago, this lady came threw she scanned two pool noodles and a 97c item, but she had two boxes in her cart. I did not see pool noodles, I asked her what was in the small box, she told me a monitor, I asked her if I could do an item inquiry, she let me, the 97c item was a $249.00 LCD monitor, the larger box was a $899.00 HD TV. All scanned for around $12.00. She should have gone to jail, management let her go. She started squacking she wanted her money back.

JASON M.- they do not police that anymore because the CSM’s have enabled it, cashiers are not aloud to turn any customer away.

I got through self check out with a cart full but because i used to work there i can work the self check out just fine and get through it pretty fast as long as someone is at the podium and hits the no bag button when i remove my bags. i worked at wal-mart for years and that is why i ring myself up, i dont want to be rang up twice for something, overpriced for something, to have to land in the customer service line that is 20 people long, and i have no choice but to wait through it for the cashiers mistake. i also like to see what im spending. plain and simple.

Seriously, the self check out is for those that only have a few items, I know its not posted anywhere but lets use some common sense here people. Not to mention that every time she pulls the bag off the shelf the associate has to clear that shit. Now those of us that thought we could make a quick trip to walmart now have to wait because there are not enough registers open 30 something registers and only 5 open mile long lines but seriously she could have went to a regular line for all that. And for the walmart employee come on i have rarely met one that smiled at the customers most act like im imposing on them to do the job they get payed for. So enough with the piousness “im doing the best I can bull shit” If you have a buggy full of shit stay away from the self check out.
And no one is whining about anything I dont think its unreasonable to say that she doesn’t belong in self check out. Not to mention she probably wont scan half the crap she has there in that buggy anyway. That is all.

I work for Walmart dont blame the customer blame the dumb management who does not know how to schedule open regular lines! Blame the home office who has no sense as to why our hours are cut when we are full time employees who are only getting 8 to 24 hours a week. When we have proved that we can get to the top bonus because we work our asses off. Blame the management who hires drug addicted morons. OR people who say they are good God devoted people and instead of doing their jobs the are in the produce cooler on the clock writing in their journal or reading a book. There truly is a problem with Walmart and its not the customer doing this because they have no choice. Before you blame then consider taking a look at the idiot managers and taking the time to call 1800 walmart and sticking up for the good workers of walmart who get shit on. While the crappy management and crappy workers dont give a shit about people. Just sayin!

I don’t get the point of having 30 lanes, and only one is staffed by a cashier. So your choice is to wait 30 minutes for a pimple-faced moron to throw your groceries around, or go through self-checkout.

If you pick the wrong line, that’s life. But I don’t care how much crap is in my cart, I’m going self-checkout and I’m probably faster than they are with it.

I switched grocery stores last year because the lines were too long at self-checkout. A big pain in the ass, but it was worth it.

Welfare is not for the lazy, though it can be abused. I work 12 hours a week at $7.45 /h. You try to live off that. I’ve applied for numerous full time positions with no results. I have no choice but to get on welfare or I will starve.

So to all you high-and-mighty not on welfare a**holes, you can all go f**k yourselves.

Ali, looks like gatorade to me.

Who cares if she spends 30 minutes checking out at the self-checkout, or 30 minutes at a staffed check-out?

And you don’t have to leave everything on the scale that you are bagging. Once you put whatever in the bag you want, then you remove it and start filling another bag.

They have more than 1 self-checkout, so no one would have to wait behind her.

As for people going thru express with more than 20 items, if there’s no one in line, I’ve had the cashiers say they will check me out even though it’s obvious I have more than 20 items.

These kind of ppl always seem chosen all the items that are not marked or at least require customer assistance. And that person takes forever to arrive. And I bet she has a stack of coupons a third of which are expired (with the expiration date clearly marked, but still she’ll argue and request mgr.). It’s like being behind someone at a drive-up atm who doesn’t believe their balance is zero, so they make 1 or 2 more attempts to find out the same thing. Zero is zero douche bag no matter how many times you try. lol Someone previously tried to make a lotta excuses for this cart-agedon, but you know 9 outta 10 times it ain’t nothing more than an ‘entitlement’ mentality.

Walmart need to put someone with some stones at that register that monitors the self-check. All they have to say is, “your cart is too full for the self-check! Go to a regular register!” Then fault out the self-check until they leave.

I like the self-check, but when my cart is more than 1/3 full, a regular register is faster for me.

Anyone with a brain, can get through the self checkouts with little to no problems. When I use them – and I sometimes have 30 or so items – it takes me less than 7 minutes. My longest trip was three carts of stuff (for a massive block party) and it took myself and my two friends around 25 minutes to do everything. We kept running out of space on the weight thing, so we had to get the cashier to override.

No offence but most people are stupid you wanna come in and out so quickly yet you just dump your whole cart on the belt if you would have it organized boxes then cans frozen together ext.. and at least take your bags off the carousel and in your basket you will get out of there so much faster!! And for the love of god go through your basket before you get the register don’t hand the cashier one item at a time saying i don’t know if i want this lets hold it for last with every other thing you have in your cart! For every self-checkout station at any store, there’s an unemployed human being. That goes for Walmart, the post office, and any other store that uses them. As far as I’m concerned, let her tie up that line. Maybe a few people will have to interact with a real person in a regular check out line for a change. If the store loses enough money from walk-outs, theft, etc. maybe they’ll get wise and eliminate self-check outs entirely and hire some more people. If waiting few minutes in a checkout line puts you over the top, maybe you need to shop online or do Peapod.

I have far less of a problem with this than I do with the C*NTS who roll up to the 20 items or less lanes with overflowing carts. I used to work at Walmart & whenever I was put on the express lane, I would turn them away. “I’m sorry ma’am, this is the express lane, I’m not allowed to check out anyone with more than 20 items.” Never once got in trouble either.

If people wanna use the self checkout to scan 200 items, that’s fine with me. I really don’t care as long as it keeps them the f*ck out of the express lanes.

Re: they do not police that anymore because the CSM’s have enabled it, cashiers are not aloud to turn any customer away.
The reason cashiers aren’t allowed to turn customers away is because someone sitting in home office has taken 1 to many phone calls from customers complaining about it. There are to many customers who think the rules don’t apply to them, and when they are made to follow the rules they turn around and call 1-800-walmart, and in turn they get what they want.
Its a viscous cycle and no one is to blame except for the higher ups who have no idea or have forgotten what its really like to work in the store and directly with the public.

I worked for walmart for 3 long years. Self check goes fast when you know what you are doing and provided the machine is actually working. I can guarantee there is at least $100 worth of shop lifting via the self checks. As for the item limits: Corporate has mandated that a cashier CANNOT refuse a customer just because they have 257 items going through a 10 items or less line. 257 is not am arbitrary number either as I had one b come though my line with that many and I was on 10 items or less. He response was I was not busy so I could take her. The problem is walmart coddles their customers to the point that most customers think everything should be handed to them on a silver platter and that they should be able to get a price changed because they couldn’t be bothered to read the price on the self and make sure that is what was for their item. If you come across a crappy cashier: just ask yourself how man A-holes they had to deal with before you. On any given day, at least 10. I personally think every person should have to serve a mandatory 2 years as a cashier for a POS employer like walmart where you not only have to suck the A#$ of crappy customers, but even more crappy supervisors. Don’t blame cashiers first. As for the few lanes open, they have the cashiers they just penny pinch too much to actually schedule people.

Worse than having a customer come through Self Checkout with such a large number of items is when they turn to me, sigh loudly and announce that they “just never can figure out how to use these darn things”. I have to go over and basically scan, bag and reload all of their items into the cart for them. While I’m doing that I usually have customers waiting on me to help them at other SCOs or people shoplifting like crazy because I’m too distracted to notice.

Really, people. It’s called SELF CHECKOUT! If you want a cashier to check out your items then go to a regular register. I don’t mind helping customers since it’s my job and I get paid pretty well to do it but it’s not fair to the other customers who have to wait for such a long time for me to get finished so I can help them too.

If you know how to use them, they’re easy, and probably a lot faster than some cashiers, unless the one monitoring them is off in lala land.

And yeah, half that stuff probably won’t be paid for, you can’t sneak stuff through on a big order with a cashier…though, the bags are on a scale. Just saying, the computers do know the weight of items. but if you hit, “don’t bag” and immediately throw the bag into the cart, you can get away with a lot

Is there a discount for self- checkout? If not, why are you doing their job? If there is, how much?

If that isn’t the most disgusting collection of groceries in a cart ive ever seen…..i hope everyone realizes that if they have those things in their cart, they might as well be eating and drinking pure sugar and come to terms with diabetes and its inevitability.

you gotta love the the politically correct guy in the wheel chair at the registers to help out to make sure self check out is done right and fixes problems. He’s like hell no, I ain’t helping her out.

I just came back from a WalMart that had one 10 Item or less register open (which was also the tobacco aisle), one regular aisle open, and one person helping with self-checkout. I was going to try self-checkout until I remembered I had an item from electronics with a security tag that had to be removed (ummm.. Before you ask there wasn’t anyone at the electronics register when I was back there) plus there was already someone with a problem at a self-checkout who was not a happy camper either. So it off to the one register with the line that snaked all the way across the aisle to jewelry. Three associates and a manager later, got me to customer service to be checked out. Yes, I got louder each time an employee shrugged their shoulders at me. I was not the only one complaining — lots of people were ticked. Normally, I would have pushed the cart into the middle of the aisle and walked out but I needed the items tomorrow — they are birthday presents and I will not have a chance to shop anywhere else tomorrow.

The point is — I don’t judge the lady in the picture. Had I not had the electronic item, I would have happily tried to check out my over $200.00 worth of stuff myself. Instead I’m wondering how close I came to being arrested for nearly causing a riot at WalMart.

Ha!! I am sadly also a cashier of Walmart, and when I work the Self-check and see someone with this many items in their cart, I know one thing: I am going to have to stand next to the customer and “babysit” their entire transaction from beginning to end, and no matter how many times I explain how the system works they will not understand, so I will be clearing endless alarms over and over and over and over and over………and over.
I also suspect they are trying to steal.

After work after 2am I go shopping at walmart for groceries and whatever else I need. They now have a bunch of self checkouts. When the cashier that rang my stuff up asked her boss about who was gonna relieve her for break she was told no one had to now. So if I go up with a cart full of stuff I will not be using those self checkouts, and my full cart will be sitting there for someone to put away cause I will leave and not come back !

I am a cashier at store #1565 Williston nd one of the biggest and busiest stores I see people going through the self checks with carts like that but it’s only because everyone else has 2 or 3 carts like that ion the regular lines

Actually, this is perfectly fine. Also there should NEVER be an item limit on the Self Checkout.
Afterall, you’re the one checking your own items out, which also means you are in more control, and can make sure there are no errors as you ring yourself out. Plus in my experience, most people use the normal lanes, and most self checkouts are either turned off, or not in use. (Then again, we are talking about Wal-Mart, who usually has like 5 or so cashiers out of 20 lanes, because either their to tight on making money, or using that cashier for other tasks that is not even apart of their job.)

Now, what I do hate is, when you’re done checking yourself out, and you have an impatient dooshbag behind you who starts to check his/hers out while you’re still gathering your stuff up. You wouldn’t do that if you was in line with a regular cashier as he/she is trying to finish up with the customer before you. (But this has happened to me only in Giant Eagle, and it was about like 10 items I was bagging, never had a cart full…but that’s to say I won’t.)

And the ones who don’t know how to use these damn things to begin with.

I agree that there should be a limit to these things. You don’t like that? Too friggin’ bad.
