The Ax Man

FAIRBANKS — A Fairbanks man who was being kicked out for causing a disturbance at Walmart last week allegedly took a hatchet from inside his coat and began swinging it wildly.

The store manager who reported the incident told Fairbanks police he did not feel threatened when an intoxicated man began yelling and swinging an ax “wildly at arm’s length” but was concerned about the safety of the customers, according to a criminal complaint filed in court. The man struck a wall with the ax and then left the store in a taxi that he was then kicked out of, the manager told police.

Fairbanks police arrested Justin Ray Tonelli, 27, a few minutes later at Fred Meyer. He smelled strongly of alcohol and was so intoxicated he was unable to stand up unaided, police said. The Walmart manager signed a citizen’s arrest form. Tonelli is being held at Fairbanks Correctional Center on charges of misdemeanor reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. Bail is set at $3,000.

A man was arrested early Wednesday morning after allegedly robbing a cab driver then stealing a machete from Walmart and threatening a police officer with it.

The 19-year-old man was arrested based on witness descriptions and a link to a woman who allowed him to use her phone to call the cab from Walmart on Greenbriar Road, according to police reports.

Russell Dale Patterson was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated assault on a peace officer following the incident.

Sgt. John Spragins, public information officer for the Wichita Falls Police Department, said:

Patterson was at the Walmart on Greenbriar Road and called for a cab to pick him up. The cab drove him to the 1600 block of Lucile where he robbed the cab driver at approximately 1 a.m. About 30 minutes later, Patterson ended up at the Walmart on Central Freeway.

Patterson stole a machete and attempted to steal a CO2 powered BB gun that looks like a revolver.

Patterson was able to get out of Walmart with the machete and was confronted by a police officer who he threatened with the machete. He was taken into custody without incident.
