Nothing says sanitary like a parrot in the produce section…

  1. There is a guy in my hometown who has an identical parrot that he carries everywhere!! He has schizophrenia and he says it’s his therapy animal. It keeps him grounded so he doesn’t flip out on people; if he gets agitated he can just pet it or talk to it.

Something I found out working at wally world, if the person get’s past the door greeter then the other workers are not allowed to tell them to remove the animal from the store unless it becomes a problem animal. I think only Management and security can say anything. We had someone with a lizard on their shoulder a few weeks ago. Too bad I was at lunch and missed it..lol

Even if the pet was a therapy animal, most birds usually have diapers to wear in public venues. She’s too heavy and doesn’t seem to have anything to clean up after when her bird leaves its mark in the produce.

I have a small parrot who loves to hang on our shirts. The only times I have taken her out in public she was in a “carrier”(which is a like a mesh enclosure that you wear strapped to your chest) and that was to an outdoor antiques car show. The other few times she rode in my car with me to pick my husband up at the train station.

I wouldn’t take her out shopping with me. I don’t see the point of it.

But I can tell you likely that that parrot is better behaved and more hygenic than any toddler. There is just as much of a chance as a parrot crapping in the store as a toddler peeing, pooing or throwing up in a store, ALL of which I’ve seen at the store I work at and TWO of which I had to CLEAN UP.

My own parrot, while she is hanging on me or tucked inside my shirt, NEVER defecates on me. NEVER.

I would be more worried about that macaw GETTING a disease from the store.

Many birds are able to control their elimination, so stepping in bird poo is not really an issue.

Also a concern is that she does not seem to have the bird in a flight harness, even clipped birds can fly off if spooked.

FYI: Well taken care of birds that are domesticated (pet parrots) do not carry diseases like outdoor birds that fly into the store.

Ok, so people are worried the bird might poop on the celery. Do ya think that produce NEVER gets pooped on? Wild birds flying overhead NEVER EVER dump a load while flying over the fields??

I do have to add though, that lady is stupid. IT’s clear that the bird is flighted, and not in a harness at all. They also have flight suits available that will keep the poop in an extended pouch, away from people and the bird itself.

At walmart the ONLY animals allowed in are service animals. Service animals do not just have to be to help see. Service animals can do anything from leading the blind, to warn for seizures, talk people down from psychotic episodes (this a talking bird specific job), retrieve dropped or hard to reach items (usually a monkey), warn for allergy triggers (like peanuts), etc.

Parrots actually can be service animals. You don’t see them often, but they are very smart and can be trained. I think mostly they are used for companions for people who have extreme anxiety disorders (ex: agoraphobia), bipolar disorder, etc. I could see the other benefit of this being that parrots live for a super long time, and could be the person’s companion for life, instead of having to be replaced every 6-8 years, like a dog. A lot of time and money goes into training service animals, so having one that can live for a long time makes sense.

On the front door of the Wal-marts in my area there’s a post on the door explaining the companies’views on service animal. Wal-mart doesnt want to get a complaint to the americans with disabilities powers that be and get sue for descrimination. When someone walks in with a pet, ONLY the door greeter can say: “Is that a service animal?” If the customer says YES, there is NOTHING ANYONE can do about it.

I just wisheople would leave their PETS at home. I love service dogs, becasue they are more well behaved than most humans

Service animals are allowed in stores, this included animals that predict seizures, help read, help reach, etc.

If any of you idiots had a service animal or knew of someone who did you would know that no business is allowed to ask why you have a service animal or what purpose it is used for.

Surprising really, with all of the inbreeding that you guys probably have in your family that none of you are so retarded you need a service animal

The Blue and Gold Macaw isn’t a bird that I would take out in public – but I agree with a lot of the comments here and disagree with many too.

However, most Macaws that I know are “paper trained” and CAN control their body “issues” – if someone owns a Blue and Gold Macaw chances are it is healthier than the average human! They are also extremely smart and have a rather large vocabulary.

But, yes, their bite is dangerous and can easily break the bone of a finger and not think twice about it. It’s not unlike any other animal – depends on how well it is trained and how well the owner takes responsibility for it.

BTW – the Blue and Gold Macaw is not considered a “parrot” – I do want to say it is one of the top three largest domestic birds kept in homes. The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest, then I believe the Scarlet is next and then the Blue and Gold. They are very expensive birds and not something that’s usually kept by someone who would not take proper care of it.

If anything, she should at least have it on a leash or a flight suit for it’s own protection.

IF and i mean IF this was a service animal it would need to have a tag, harness, or collar indicating as such. Service Animals are certified and go through a screening and training processes, you can’t just pick up any animal and suddenly call it your “service animal”.

Service animals do NOT have to have anything indicating that they are service animals.

I am an employee at WalMart, and did the training on service animals. It can be any animal. It does not need to be marked. People Greeters only are only allowed to ask if it’s a service animal, and if they say yes, that’s it.

However, should the person neglect to clean up after animal, or if the animal seems as though it may put someone at risk WITHOUT the caretaker responding to and preventing such things, the manager on duty CAN ask them to remove the animal.

Yes, some people abuse the laws and take their pets into stores and lie when asked if the animal is a service animal. That is wrong…but it happens. But that are some people (like my son) who has a legitimate service dog and we have had to deal with a manager screaming at him to get the dog out of his store, have had the cops called on us… and have had a hotel illegally charge us a “pet fee” without our knowledge after we checked out. His dog is ALWAYS in harness and well marked as a service dog..but because he disability is not so easily seen to the average person (he has a chromosome abnormality & has autistic characteristics)…people assume that we are lying about the dog being a service dog. Assumptions and first impressions are often not reality. Please be kind until you know the truth.

Going to fix a few misconceptions..
    1) There is not official certifying body for service animals. Some schools that train them for other individuals will say that on a given day the animal (usually a dog) behaved properly and they approve it going out in public with their name attached to it. Those that don’t go through a school (for numerous reasons) still have to have animals that behave properly in public, or they can be asked to remove the animal and obtain goods and services without it. There are examples of a basic public access test out there on the net that are pretty easy to find.
These are printouts from the ADA to businesses.
    http://www.ada.gov/svcanimb.htm
    http://www.ada.gov/qasrvc.htm
Here’s a basic standard of how a SD should act. There’s a more in depth thing at the bottom.
    http://www.psychdog.org/publicaccess.html
    2) Walmart isn’t a mess due to the ADA, Walmart is a mess due to Walmart denying access to legitimate service animals on a constant basis, even after warnings etc. There was a govt lawsuit.
    http://www.ada.gov/walmart.htm
Many people and their grossly under-trained pets have put a bad rep on legitimate service animals, and also have created dangerous situations for those partnered with a service animal.
Please…..leave your pets home where they belong if it isn’t a pet-friendly establishment.
BTW..lying about a SD carries a pretty hefty fine and/or jail time in most states.

I’m betting you wouldn’t say the same thing about a puppy in the produce section. Macaws are awesome birds, and if they are trained and treated well they are very well-mannered. Any bird owner worth their weight in gold will already have the situation covered when the inevitable ‘potty’ incident happens. It’s not the animal’s fault. But these birds also don’t relieve themselves after each and every second, either, like some people here seem to think.

And, seriously, how many people with dirty hands – hands that didn’t get washed when they last used the bathroom – have touched the produce you’re about to buy? And you’re concerned about a parrot?

Actually, I did find out that u can bring any pet into walmart, as long as u keep it out of any area with food.so someone could have asked her to go to a different section of the store.that was employees not paying attention and a woman not giving a damn about other peoples food.

I used to work at a well-known grocery store, and a guy would always bring his parrot in with him…despite the parrot constantly pooping on his shoulder, it was a freaking cool bird and everyone loved them. Just sayin…

It is entirely possible (and not unlikely) that this macaw is a service animal. And even if it isn’t I’d rather have bird shit on my celery than Little Johnny’s excrement. Macaws and parrots are also very intelligent and trainable – I had a green wing macaw growing up who would ask to go “big poop” and wait until she was moved to an appropriate place to do it. I’d be more concerned w/ the fact that the bird isn’t in a flight harness and could potentially be startled and get lost.

If the bird has a hookbill and zygodactylous feet and comes from the order Psittaciformes, then “parrot” is a perfectly acceptable broad term to use to describe the bird. Macaws specifically come from the family Psittacidae (or true parrots). If macaws are “true parrots” then why do people keep screaming that they aren’t parrots??
In relation to the picture, if the bird was in fact a service bird and necessary for the woman, please at least put a diaper on it. Macaws can control their functions, but accidents happen!

To all and sundry saying variations on “it isn’t a parrot, it’s a Macaw”– listen closely idiots:

    Macaws (Ara) are members of:
    Kingdom: Animalia
    Phylum: Chordata
    Class: Aves –birds, think avian
    Order: Psittaciformes –hookbills/
    Family: Psittacidae — parrots
    Subfamily: Psittacinae –parrots (again)
    Tribe: Arini

and as such are all Parrots.

Oh, and for the special idiot saying that a Macaw was the source of “swine flu”, fool, if you have no idea what a swine is, look in the mirror. Pig, idiot, pig, not parrot, nor horse (as in equine influenza).

The unadulterated stupidity prevalent in many of these postings give me great joy in my decision to never, under any circumstance patronise a Wal-Mart.

I’m a big animal lover and was in Walmart when she was there. Employees did say she doesn’t control the bird and it does poop everywhere. Love birds but they carry diseases and this bird and person had no identification stating it was in service as service animals do. They can be behaved all they want but we don’t know if it’s a real service animal and I don’t want to take the chance of my food being contaminated by various diseases, mites, poop or even feathers. My animals are indoors but don’t come into my kitchen! So ok maybe I read to much and went to school (nursing) but I don’t think it’s paranoid to be careful with your health.
Also service animals cannot be pets like therapy animals can and this was definitely a pet she was kissing on in the food department. Because of this it may ruin it for people who really need their service animals with them, it’s giving service animals a bad name.

It’s a shame that people like this ruin it for true service animals. This lady did not have anything to show this was a service animal. This bird poops all over and she does not have control of it. Service animals cannot be pets and this was definitely a pet from the way she was kissing on it in the food department. I do not want to take the chance of my food being contaminated with the various diseases birds can carry not to mention the poop, feathers and whatever else could happen. What about the poor people with lung problems? they can’t be around birds especially the mites they carry. Animals should definitely be limited in food environments to only certified service animals not therapy animals or pets. My animals are indoors but don’t come into my kitchen. Ok maybe I read to much and nursing classes taught me too much lol Btw, I was there when she was there and the employees told me she does not control the bird and they have to clean up after it….shame on that manager! This is the Tyler Walmart on 69

I really think that due to the woman’s appearance, and the fact that she is using a scooter, this may very well be a service animal.
Sometimes parrots are trained to assist with motor functions in people with nerve damage, IE Doing up buttons, picking up small objects, using keys in doors, etc.

Hey forget about the lady, and the shoppers. What about the poor parrot? he did not ask to be there, his less-intelligent owner did. You may not like glancing at bird poop, but that poor bird is probably scared to death of all these people gawking at him and loud scary stuff everywhere.

This is actually a photo taken at a Wal-Mart in Humble, TX (Not Tyler)….I know this because she is my grandmother. When she passed away last year I took the parrot (named Skye). She truly loved her animals and had a heart bigger than most people you ever meet.

Shy, sorry to hear about the passing of your grandmother.
However I am dying to know, was Skye actually trained to do anything to help her with a disability? I know they are smart and such, but you have to end the debate if possible.

I feel bad when parrots and macaws get slandered like most of these comments seem to do. I own two (non-service) Blue and Golds myself, which is likely why. It also infuriates me when non-service animals are brought into stores or on public transit. My mother’s boyfriend does this when he goes to and from work to ‘make my life easier when I take them to work’ and that pisses me off no end (his work is fine with them, but he brings them on the bus).

It is HARMFUL to parrots to put them on neck and leg leashes. If Sky had taken off for any reason she’d break her neck and die. There are body harnesses especially made for birds to prevent this from happening. SHY, I highly suggest you get one.

(Particularly for SHY and his/her comment) It doesn’t matter if your grandmother (may she have peace in passing) has a heart of gold, taking a pet into a store is wrong (possibly illegal), and lying about it being a service animal (which, since you inherited her, I’m guessing she isn’t) is illegal.

TL;DR: Collars are dangerous, having a pet in a store or on a bus/train/etc. is wrong and maddening.
